Feels Like An Old Comfortable Coat...

Tonight I watched the 2008 version of the nostalgic cult phenomenon, "American Gladiator" starring your hosts Hulk Hogan and Laila Ali. I used to loooooooove this show back in the day. Yeah, it's cheesy and the contestants seem way to amped during their segued interviews but its like a train wreck - you can't take your eyes off of it. For those who don't know what the show is about, it basically involves muscle bound men and women in skimpy shiny suits with personality known as the "Gladiators." They take on everyday Jill and Joes like us (ok maybe not my cheeseburger eating self) who go on to compete against each other and against the gladiators in different physically challenging events. Assault, Joust, Hit and Run and Hang Tough are just a few names to whet your palate. The winner goes on to win a shiny new vehicle, some cash and the chance to become a Gladiator. It's a cornball fest but it is fun to watch these folks do their damnedest to get through the Eliminator which has a serious obstacle course to even the playing field for the competing guys and gals. The gladiators don't mess with the contestants during this because with some of them clocking in at nearly four minutes, the distraction could lead to a two-hour mini-series. So go on and watch Mayhem,Titan, Militia, Toa, Fury, Hellga and Crush push the little guy and gal around. Nitro and Ice would be proud!

* The show airs Mondays at 8p.m. EST on NBC. More info at http://www.nbc.com/. You can catch the old school version on the ESPN Classic channel.

In mainstream music news, American Idol winner Taylor Hicks was dropped from his label J Records for failing to sell 1 million units (that's for you Denise) or albums. That's cd's for you young whipper-snappers. Apparently 699,000 folks dug it. I wasn't one of them. Taylor's cool and all but mainstream he ain't. According to this article on msnbc.com he'll he recording on his own. In related news, Ruben Studdard's last album went double-wood selling an impressive 236,000 copies. Seems like losing was a blessing in disguise for Chris Daughtry and Clay Aiken who did significantly better than their Idolmates in their respective cycle.
