Homegirl of the Month - January 2010, Sade

What better way to kick off this year's HOTM thread than with the iconic, sexy, classic, soulful, beautiful Sade. She is back this year with a new album entitled Soldier of Love due for release February 9. Sade burst on to the music scene in 1984 with her band Pride (renamed collectively Sade) and their album Diamond Life. The record went on to produce hits like the mega successful Smooth Operator, Your Love Is King, and Hang On To Your Love. The group released the follow-up Promise in 1985 yielding hits like Is It A Crime and Never As Good As The First Time.

The subsequent album Stronger Than Pride released almost 4 years later gave us the hits Paradise and my personal favorite Nothing Can Come Between Us. Sade would wait another four years to release Love Deluxe which birthed the monstrous No Ordinary Love. Fans waited patiently between each album with the longest stint to that date being between Love Deluxe and Lovers Rock (released in 2000). This last waiting period was a record ten years!

Sade has been known to say that she doesn't write music unless life has inspired her to do so. She often shies from interviews and maintains an intensely private life. Amazingly, and with good reason, her fans eagerly wait each new musical offering. She has inspired millions with her touching lyrics often of sorrow and love gone wrong. However, it's her cognac like delivery and unmistakable voice that gives pause to all of us who truly dig this lady.

I saw her in concert once and it was one of the best concerts I've ever been to. Her band is awesome and has even put out a couple of discs sans their lovely lead. Sweetback is the collective name the band took on when they ventured out to do their thing. You can check them out on iTunes or Amazon. If you love Sade, then you'll love Sweetback.

Beauty, Grace, Talent and an Unwavering sense of self - these are the things that make Sade the musical icon that she is. Sade, Life Inside My Head Salutes you!

I haven't purchased Sade's new album, not sure if I will, but I plan to take the time and listen to each song and, if this recording is anything like her past recordings, vibe to her soulful spirit.

Don,

You will not be dissapointed on any Sade record. Even the discs that I'm not completely in love with, I appreciated enough to keep them in rotation.
