February's Homegirl is none other than the spit fire that is Jada Pinkett Smith. Mrs. Smith charmed viewers as the spunky, sharp tongued Lena James on Bill Cosby's college sitcom, A Different World. Jada got her start majoring in theatre and dance at the Baltimore School for the Arts. She went on to attend the North Carolina School of the Arts but left early to pursue an acting career in Los Angeles.

Her most notable early role was that of Lyric in the black folk's cult romance, Jason's Lyric opposite Allen Payne. She played the sassy Peaches in Keenan Ivory Wayan's blackxploitation dramedy, A Low Down Dirty Shame. She went on to star in F. Gary Gray's Set It Off about four women who decide to rob a bank after running into life hardships. Jada was apart of the worldwide blockbuster series The Matrix. She played the role of Niobe in The Matrix Reloaded (2003) and Matrix Revolutions (2003). She starred opposite Eddie Murphy in his successful remake of The Nutty Professor in 1996.

As you can see, Jada has been a busy woman but her most important role as she has often mentioned is that of mother. She and husband, Hollywood golden boy, Will Smith are proud parents of Willow and Jaden and Will's son from a previous marriage, Trey. The two actors have been married for nearly 13 years and have proven that Hollywood marriages can withstand the scrutiny and stress. The two started the Will and Jada Smith Family Foundation which focuses on inner city youth and family support services. They also produced the hit sitcom All of Us, starring LisaRaye and Duane Martin which was loosely based on their real life family situation.

Jada is still currently busy with her TNT series HawthoRNe about a nurse dealing with the intersections of life in the hospital setting. The show has received positive reviews and further demonstrates the versatility of the actress. Jada is a great example of how barriers can be crushed and overcome in Hollywood. Her dedication to family, community and her craft set a great example for women of all ages.

Jada Pinkett has definitely cemented her status as an icon. Which isn't easy, considering she's married to Will Smith. I kinda felt Jada would be a start from as early on as her A Different World days. She just 'had it.'

Love how you pointed out her most important role as mother. Jada, true celebrity.

Definitely award-winning.

Jada just does her thing. I just love that she's always been very real, in interviews and in roles that she plays.
